Tornado Season is Here


As of June 27th 2019, Indiana has had 12 confirmed tornadoes. Indiana averages about 22 of the average 1200 US tornadoes (according to NOAA). Tornadoes are classified into 6 classifications (EF0-EF5) of 3 groups (Weak, Strong, Violent). The classifications and groups go as followed:

  • Weak EF0, EF1 Wind speeds of 65 to 110 mph

  • Strong EF2, EF3 Wind speeds of 111 to 165 mph

  • Violent EF4, EF5 Wind speeds of 166 to 200 mph or more

When it comes to tornadoes, there are two types of strategy for announcing one. It can either be announced under Watch or Warning. A tornado WATCH means a tornado is possible. A tornado WARNING means a tornado is already occurring or will occur soon. GO TO YOUR SAFE PLACE IMMEDIATELY. Preparing for a tornado is something that every family should do. Assembling an emergency preparedness kit should consist of (According to the Red Cross)

At a minimum, you should have the basic supplies listed below:
  • Water: one gallon per person, per day (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home)

  • Food: non-perishable, easy-to-prepare items (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home).

  • Flashlight

  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible)

  • Extra batteries (Similar item available in the Red Cross Store)

  • Deluxe family first aid kit

  • Medications (7-day supply) and medical items

  • Multi-purpose tool

  • Sanitation and personal hygiene items

  • Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies)

  • Cell phone with chargers (Similar item available in the Red Cross Store)

  • Family and emergency contact information

  • Extra cash

  • Emergency blanket

  • Map(s) of the area

Once the tornado has passed aid the injured, watch out for hazards, be safe while cleaning and stay informed about the weather.
